Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Review

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery Review

Gavin Brown

Glass Onion: A Knives Out the mystery is the spin-off to the movie Knives Out that takes place in Greece. The movie stars Daniel Craig as Benoit Blanc, Edward Norton as Miles Bron, Janelle Monáe as Helen, Dave Bautista, Madelyn Cline as Whisky, Jessica Henwick as Peg, and Kate Hudson as Birdie Jay. The movie is also directed by Rian Johnson who also directed Knives Out. Glass Onion is another mystery movie involving the detective Benoit Blanc that’ll leave you questioning who did it the entirety of the film.

Reactions to Glass Onion are mostly positive. Glass Onion “was a great mind-boggling mystery,” Central Sophomore Jerimiah Merrick said. “I had high expectations that were met.” Sophomore at Central Nina Nieto said. Other people like Senior at Central Annie Schults had different opinions about Glass Onion. “Honestly I had higher expectations for this film, even though I still found it enjoyable,” Annie said.

Before I get into the review I think it is important to know Glass Onion is a standalone story from the first Knives Out movie featuring an entirely new set of characters except for of course Benoit Blanc who is known as the world’s greatest detective in Knives Out and Glass Onion. However, if you have never seen the first Knives Out recommend it.

IF YOU WANT TO AVOID SPOILERS, DO NOT READ PAST THIS POINT!

Glass Onion starts off introducing every main character on a call when they receive a wooden box with puzzles on it that once opened had an invitation from Miles Bron for a murder mystery weekend on his private island. Every person who got the box is long-time friends with Miles Bron and their friend group is named the disrupters. The story then pans over to Andi who receives the box unincluded from the group with her smashing it open instead of going through the puzzles. Blanc also assumingly receives the box as he shows up in Greece to go to the island along with everyone else.

The twist of the story is then brought to light when it was revealed Andi is actually her sister Hellen acting as her and working together with Blanc to try and figure out who murdered her sister. Andi and Miles worked together on a company called Alpha. Andi would not let him go through with a risky idea to power peoples’ homes with solid hydrogen crystals. So Miles sued her and took the company away from her.

In the plot twist, it was revealed that Andi died of suicide, but in an email sent to her sister, Andi exclaimed that she found the original Glass Onion napkin with her handwriting on it and said she was going to tell everyone. This did not make sense as to why she would have done that so after a little bit of problem-solving by Benoit Blanc figured out Andi’s murderer was Miles and he gave his drink to Duke in order to keep him from saying anything about Andi being dead.

After some breaking of expensive glass, and a single hydrogen crystal blowing up the Glass Onion Miles has built on his island the disrupters turn against Miles in order to do what is right.

I thought this movie was very creative in its plot twist. I was led into the movie thinking something totally different than what was actually reality. Even though Andi having a twin sister was a little cliche I still was definitely not expecting the story to in that direction. Every character had a backstory so it was hard to predict who would want to commit murder since it seemed like everyone had the motive to go through with murdering Miles (except Peg and Whisky). A murder mystery is supposed to keep you guessing and Glass Onion definitely did that.

The characters in this movie were amazing. I felt every character had life and no character was bland or boring throughout the entire movie. All the actors feel very invested in their roles and this is what brought out life to the movie. Specifically, Janelle Monáe was amazing in her role as Helen. I thought the character was funny, especially seeing how everything actually went down after the twist. Daniel Craig also delivers once again an excellent performance as Benoit Blanc. Everything from the wittiness down to the accent was great.

I felt the ending of Glass Onion although more of a moral victory was fitting to the story. Miles’s life had been working for Alpha and to see that taken away from him in an instant is similar to how Miles took away Alpha from Helen’s sister Andi. I felt like this was definitely fitting and based on the ending he is also probably going to jail as the disrupters were now on Helen’s side which made me end the movie satisfied Helen got revenge.

Glass Onion is a movie of many questions, twists, and turns, and if you’re looking for something fun to watch on a weekend this movie is definitely worth a play. I can assure the creative plot and the outstanding acting of Glass Onion will leave you locked in on the story.
