Super Bowl Preview

The Super Bowl is on February 12, 2023 at State Farm Stadium in Phoenix Arizona. This game is between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles. It is for the Championship of the NFL and it is the most watched game every year in the United States. 

This is the fifth time the Chiefs have made the Super Bowl. They are 2-2 in their previous Super Bowl appearances. They lost in the 2021 Super Bowl to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and won the 2020 super bowl over the San Francisco 49ers. That was their second Super Bowl win. Their other Super Bowl win was in 1970 against the Minnesota Vikings. They also made their first Super Bowl appearance but lost to the Green Bay Packers. This is the fourth time the Eagles have made the Super Bowl. They are 1-2 in their previous Super Bowl appearances. They won the 2018 Super Bowl over the New England Patriots. They lost in the 2005 Super Bowl to the New England Patriots, and lost the 1981 Super Bowl to Oakland Raiders. 

Both teams have had great seasons. The Chiefs finished with a 14-3 record and won the AFC West division, and were the first seed in the AFC after a coin flip due to the suspended game between the Buffalo Bills and the Cincinnati Bengals when Damar Hamlin went into Cardiac arrest during the game, causing the suspension of rest of the game which would have decided the first seed. The Eagles also finished 14-3 and won the NFC East divisions and finished first in the NFC. 

Both teams got a bye so they did not have to play in the Wild Card round. The Chiefs beat the Jacksonville Jaguars in the divisional round 27-20. In this game Patrick Mahomes suffered a high ankle sprain, which was concerning for the Chiefs, but still played in the championship game. The Eagles beat the New York Giants 38-7. The Chiefs played the Cincinnati Bengals in the Championship round and this was a rematch from last year where the Bengals came out on top but this year the Chiefs won 23-20 on a game winning field goal. The Eagles beat the San Francisco 49ers in the Championship round 31-7. The 49ers had third string quarterback Brock Purdy hurt his shoulder and this hurt the 49ers team. 

This match should be a good one. These two teams have not played each other this season. Also, there is no surprise these teams are in the Super Bowl. Wesley Collins, a football fan said “Both teams were first in their conference and have played well all year.” Both teams have a great offense. The Chiefs are best in the NFL in total yards, passing yards, and offensive scoring. While the Eagles are second in total yards and ninth in passing yards, and second in scoring offense. On defense the Chiefs are eleventh in yards given up on defense and sixteenth in points allowed. While the Eagles are second in total yards allowed and tied for fourth in points per game allowed. The Chiefs have had a few injuries where Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce won’t be 100 percent. Gavin Brown, a football fan, said “The injuries won’t affect them because they played in the championship game and played well.” 

The odds for this game have the Eagles favored to win by 1.5. Brown said “I think the Chiefs will win because they have an explosive offense and a great pass rush defense.” Matt Brown of ESPN said “the Eagles will win because of their versatility within their offense and defense that can pressure Mahomes.  Collins said “Eagles will win because they are a great team and Mahomes being banged up could affect them.” Mike Levitan, a football fan said “Eagles will win because they have had a dominant team all year.” There are many mixed opinions on who will win in the game, which will make for a great game. 

Every year people who don’t care about the game watch the Super Bowl. These people watch the commercials and the halftime performance. One commercial people are expected to see during the game is the Burger King commercial since it has been played so many times this year. This year Rihanna will be performing. Brown said “The halftime show will be good because Rhianna is performing but is also nervous because in past years the halftime show has had multiple artists.” 

This should be a great game with two great teams and they have been good all year. We will have to wait and see how these two teams play. If injuries will affect the Chiefs, or will Mahomes and Kelce, an extra week of rest will help them and be able to pull through.
