Poker Face TV Review
March 8, 2023
Poker Face, the Drama-comedy available on Peacock, starring Natasha Lyonne, has taken the internet by storm with mixed reviews. The show starts out with Natasha Lyonne as Charlie Cale, a woman with a very special ability to tell if somebody is lying. Circumstances force her to hit the road and she keeps getting into situations where someone is dead, and she has to figure out who the killer is.
WARNING- SPOILERS AHEAD!
Charlie is everything you would want in a protagonist. She’s witty and can even rock sunglasses, a cardigan, and shorts all at once. In the pilot episode, Charlie works at a casino. The boss’ son, Sterling Frost Jr., is aware of Charlie’s exceptional gift to tell if somebody is lying and wants to use her to teach one of his gambling whales (A gambler who consistently wagers a lot of money.) a lesson.
This opportunity will get Charlie a lot of money, but there’s a problem, Charlie’s friend has recently been mysteriously murdered and she can’t help but get a strange feeling that Frost Jr and his associate, Cliff Legrand are somehow involved.
Charlie eventually puts the pieces together and realizes that Sterling Frost Jr. ordered the death of her best friend. Charlie gets revenge by outing his plan to play dirty gambling and ruining his reputation. After Frost Jr realizes his reputation is ruined he gets a call from his father, but instead of answering, he walks out the balcony and jumps to his death.
This leaves Frost Sr who is ready to kill Charlie, which is why she’s on the run in the first place. Each following episode shares the same specific formula. The guest stars are introduced, leading to a crime. Each episode is sort of like its own movie, taking place in different locations in unique scenarios.
The tv show is very similar to the ‘knives out’ movies, which isn’t surprising because both are written by Rian Johnsen. Poker Face has plenty of funny moments in episodes like “The Stall”. The show has a strong formula but isn’t for everyone. It’s slower-paced and can even be boring at times. You most likely won’t finish an episode and be dying to know what happens next, since each episode is completely different.
Poker Face has a lot to offer but is pretty slow paced and not the most enticing. Although all is revealed in the end, each episode doesn’t feel like It’s leading up to anything and honestly feels different to anything I’ve ever watched. Overall, if you’re looking for something new and comedic, this is definitely for you. I personally think It’s a great show with a great plot but is slower paced than most other murder mysteries.
