Students in Champaign Central High School have been going all out for Spirit Week, with students dressed up in outfits making an appearance in every class. But why exactly are we doing this?
Spirit Week has been part of Central’s history for at least 19 years and continues to be celebrated to this day to represent our school’s spirit, bringing together our school’s community.
In a recent interview, Ms. O’Donnell said, “I think they’re gonna laugh at me, but that’s okay, because part of Spirit Week is to have fun and be yourself and just accept it,” as an answer to how she thinks her students will react. Even if you don’t really try that hard, or try the hardest, the outcome will probably end up with everyone having fun as long as you participate.
Ms. Polarek has similar ideas about Spirit Week, saying it’s something to look forward to if you need to be cheered up. “I think it’s fun; I think it brings something to look forward to each day, like what are we looking forward to today.”
Evan Larson chose not to participate in the event and considers it a waste of time, stating, “Oh boy, I have to wear stuff that I think about.”
When Ms. Polarek heard that Larson didn’t participate she questioned why. His response was, “Pajama day is all fun and games until you have soccer practice right after.”
Lily Haydel, a freshman at Central who participated in Spirit Week said,“I feel like my outfit is very out there, while most people just wore pajama pants.”
Even though people have extremely mixed feelings about Spirit Week there are still people who enjoy it to the fullest, such as Ms. Quirk.
She prefers low-effort outfits stating, “I do the ones that are low effort.”
