Dancing With the Stars is one of the most influential shows of the modern era. It was founded in 2005 and is still produced in Los Angeles. The show has been able to bring people with similar opinions together on social media to support their favorite dancing pair. Season 33 has gained quite a lot of popularity because of the familiar faces that have taken to the dance floor.
In Dancing With the Stars, there are thirteen different couples. In the couple, there is a pro dancer and a celebrity who are paired up at random. The celebrities can vary from reality TV stars to Olympic medalists. The couples this season are as follows:
- Joey Graziadei (celebrity) paired with Jenna Johnson (pro)
- Ilona Maher (celebrity) paired with Alan Bersten (pro)
- Chandler Kinney (celebrity) paired with Brandon Armstrong (pro)
- Stephen Nedoroscik (celebrity) paired with Rylee Arnold (pro)
- Dwight Howard (celebrity) paired with Daniella Karagach (pro)
- Jenn Tran (celebrity) paired with Sasha Farber (pro)
- Tori Spelling (celebrity) paired with Pasha Pashkov (pro)
- Reginald VelJohnson (celebrity) paired with Emma Slater (pro)
- Brooks Nader (celebrity) paired with Gleb Savchenko (pro)
- Eric Roberts (celebrity) paired with Britt Stewart (pro)
- Anna Delvey (celebrity) paired with Ezra Sosa (pro)
- Danny Amendola (celebrity) paired with Whitney Carson (pro)
- Phaedra Parks (celebrity) paired with Valentin “Val” Chmerkovskiy (pro)
Contestants work together to create a dance that goes with the theme for the night. For example, on Disney Night, pairs choreographed a dance to Disney songs. They also style their costumes, makeup, and props after the theme.
Couples are eliminated from judge votes and audience votes. Each week, viewers of the show can text a certain number and it will add votes to their favorite pair. Couples are judged on a scale of one to ten. From there, pairs are eliminated by their scoring.
All of the pairs this season have shown how tough they are and how passionate they are about dance. Many of these celebrities have never stepped on a dance floor and some of them ended up making it to the finale or even winning the mirrorball.
In this season, the judges were Carrie Ann Inaba, Bruno Toniolo, and Derek Hough. The hosts for this season were previous Dancing with the Stars pros and mirrorball champions. Julianne Hough, past celebrity and mirrorball champion, and actor Alfonso Ribeiro are examples of this.
Season 33 has been one of the most successful seasons. The viewer voting record was broken in a single episode with 32 million votes for the finale. This season has also been gaining a lot of traction on social media. Many of the celebrities and even some pros have blown up on social media. Love interests, favorite dances, and adorable friendships have brought a lot of popularity to the show.
However, some people say that past seasons were better. Shanna Flynn, a long-time fan of Dancing with the Stars, said “ I feel like previous seasons are still better. The dances used to be longer and more memorable. And the judges seemed to have more harsh, yet constructive criticism”. The younger generation seemed to like the season more than past seasons. That could have been because of the prominent social media presence or the familiar faces. Putting that aside, the majority of people can agree that this season was very fun to watch.
Dancing With the Stars releases a new episode every Tuesday for 9 weeks. However, on week 3, they have an episode come out on Tuesday and Wednesday. Every week the cast gets personalized costumes, shoes, and even robes to go with their dance. They get their own trailer to do hair and makeup as well.
A big event happened for Dancing With the Stars this season, their 500th episode came out. Dancing with the Stars has been out since 2005. Many say each season gets better and better, which brings the show more viewers.
The show started with Premiere Night. Though, unlike past seasons, there were no eliminations in the first week. Although, in the second week on Oscar Night, Tori Spelling and Pasha Pashkov were voted off along with Anna Delvey and Ezra Sosa. Spelling and Pashkov performed a Rumba while Delvey and Sosa performed a quickstep.
In week three, there were no eliminations. However, we can’t say the same for week four. Hair Metal Night cost us two couples. Reggie VelJohnson and Emma Slater as well as Eric Roberts and Britt Stewart were eliminated. VelJohnson and Slater performed a Cha-Cha and Stewart and Roberts performed a paso doble.
Weeks five through eight had regular eliminations. Brooks Nader and Gleb Savchenko were eliminated in week five with a salsa for Dedication Night, Phaedra Parks and Valentin Chmerkovskiy were eliminated in week six with a jazz routine for Disney Night, Jenn Tran and Sasha Farber were eliminated in week seven with a contemporary dance for Halloween Nightmares Night, and Dwight Howard and Daniella Karagach were eliminated with an Argentine Tango for the 5ooth episode.
Week nine is the semifinals. Surprisingly, no one was eliminated. This shocked viewers and performers alike. Because of this, during the finals, there were five couples instead of four. In previous seasons, there have been four couples in the finale except for season 32, where there were five couples.
The final five couples and placings are Danny Amendola and Whitney Carson in fifth, Stephen Nedoroscik and Rylee Arnold in fourth, Chandler Kinney and Brandon Armstrong in third, Ilona Maher and Alan Bersten in second, and Joey Graziadei and Jenna Johnson in first.
Graziadei and Johnson won in the finals with a freestyle dance to Canned Heat by District 78 ft. Jake Simpson and a Cha Cha to Can’t Stop the Feeling by Justin Timberlake. They scored a 29/30 on the freestyle and a 30/30 on the Cha Cha. Freshman at Central, Jayda Vandyke, commented on the pair’s win and said: “Joey was the most improved dancer and a much better dancer than Ilona. There was no way Chandler was winning just because she had danced before. I think they were the most deserving pair”.
Overall people would say this season was very messy or even unhinged. This one will for sure be one of many seasons to come and will go down in history.
