Many NFL fans got a sense of deja vu after hearing that the Kansas City Chiefs were set to face off against the Philadelphia Eagles on February 8th during the 59th Super Bowl. Just two years ago, in Super Bowl LVII, the Eagles and Chiefs met for the 11th time in their franchise’s history and lost; it is putting it lightly that this was a story based on revenge.
Prior to the Super Bowl this year, the Chiefs reigned as one of the top Super Bowl contenders for nearly the entire season with their only losses being to the Buffalo Bills and the Denver Broncos. In contrast, the Philadelphia Eagles had an uphill battle. After losing the last game of the 2023 season to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers put an end to a disappointing 11-7 season, the team needed to turn themselves around. They exceeded this and ended the regular season of this year by going 14-3, winning their division, and making it to the Super Bowl.
On the day of the Super Bowl, the majority of the nation still didn’t believe the Eagles had what it takes to win. According to the Marist Poll, a common sporting poller, about “six in ten Americans (58%) think the Kansas City Chiefs will win this year’s Super Bowl. 42% say the Philadelphia Eagles will win.” However, the data can still have its flaws in certain scenarios. People attending Super Bowl parties such as Chris Folsom chose to cheer for the Eagles. Even though he did not root for Philadelphia during the regular season Folsom along with other NFL fans did not want a Chiefs 3-peat.
Folsom ended up being “very happy” as the game progressed. The Super Bowl went on with the Eagles running down the field and practically punching the Chiefs in the mouth with a 24-0 lead at halftime. Kendrick Lamar came out and performed his halftime show with guest stars SZA, Mustard, and Serena Williams. After the half even though the Chiefs outscored the Eagles by 6 points, with the Eagles’ offense staying on the field and their defense sacking Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs still lost the game 40-22.
When the game was over Molly Kloeppel who watched the entire game said she was “surprised by the outcome because usually the refs are playing for the Chiefs, but this year they were not and the Eagles came out on top.”
While it was a surprising turn of events for many of the NFL to watch, once again there will be no 3-peat and the Eagles have added a second Super Bowl win to the franchise’s history.
