April is quite a packed month for Central. The music program has multiple upcoming concerts and jazz events, the athletics department has multiple IHSA & Big 12 meets, finals are lurching closer, and more. As you walk down the hallways to get to class, you may have seen multiple posters for different club events. Moreover, you probably heard about the merchandise from the announcements. If you browse the order form, a certain mascot appears on the backs of the shirts, crewnecks, and hoodies.
Now to students who are unfamiliar with the Chronicle, it probably seems strange that the image on the back is a polar bear rather than, say, a picture of a pen or a clipart image of a newspaper article. In fact, the Maroons logo or simply the face of Max Maroon (Central’s brown bear mascot) would have seemed more logical. So why not pick any of the options above?
The Bear Behind the Scenes
If you have ever visited or had a class in Room 3206, this bear sitting on the shelf should be familiar (unless you sat in the very front and on the right side of the room). This is Puddles, the well-beloved mascot and member of the Chronicle. The current seniors from the Class of 2025 are the most familiar with him since he’s actually been here for quite some time. In fact, Puddles first appeared in their freshman year, aka the school year of 2021 – 2022.
“Puddles was left in the room by a person going by the name Foxy,” says Chloe Flynn, news editor of the Chronicle. “They were giving out gifts to the Chronicle at the time. Janini wrote an article about searching for Foxy.” After Puddles’ arrival, he became a permanent resident of Room 3206 and has stayed as the Chronicle’s mascot ever since.
