Two years ago, I bought the first Hollow Knight game to cure my boredom at the time. I loved the first game, and it easily became my favorite game of all time. When I finished it, I was hungry for more, and I found Silksong. Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced on February 14th, 2019, and was finally released on September 4th, 2025 by Team Cherry. That is an almost 6 year long wait for a game, which has made it notorious as one of the most anticipated games ever.
Silksong isn’t only a major thing in their small office in Adelaide, Australia, but has gotten across the whole world. I’ve met many people on edge about getting the game, and I’ve told all of them that it is worth it. I would like to use this article as a resource for people on edge about getting the game to make a final decision. I’ve asked some people in Central what their thoughts are about the game to help people make a final decision about buying the game.
One of the biggest talking points recently has been the game’s difficulty because many things in this game do double damage, heavily increasing the difficulty of the game. The community has become pretty split because of this, some embracing the challenge, and some making work-arounds in modifications to the game to reduce the damage done. These complaints have forced Team Cherry to do an emergency update on September 11th, 2025 to change the damage of some enemies and hazards to make the game easier. “I really enjoy the boss fights, but random enemies doing double damage is bad,” Alex Mizzen said.
While the difficulty of Silksong can be a big drawback for some, many seasoned Hollow Knight players might not see too much difficulty compared to how a new player may see it. Some people who have loved Hollow Knight may have less difficulty with the game compared to others ,because of many things from Hollow Knight easily transferring to the sequel. “It’s pretty implied that Hollow Knight is a tutorial for Silksong,” Mizzen said.
With the wild gaming market today, people were expecting Silksong to cost from $40-$50 because of how many popular games this year are costing upwards of $60. When the final price was announced on September 1st, 2025 to be $20, people were ecstatic at the low price. Team Cherry also promised all the people who donated money to help fund Silksong’s development a free copy of the game on its release, showing how much they respect their fans. “Silksong being this cheap and having this much content really shows how they don’t care about how much it costs, and that shows dedication to the fans,” Garrick Mcculley said.
When I first heard the name “Team Cherry” my thought was that it was a full team of at least 100 people. But when I learned more about Hollow Knight, I was baffled by the fact that my favorite game of all time was made by just 4 Australian men and a dream.
By far the biggest point about Silksong is the development time. Fans have been anticipating this game for 6 years, with most of those years lacking news for its release. The community has gone the lengths to make full Youtube channels to report if there is any news everyday. In a recent interview of some of the game developers, they explained why the game took 6 years to make. “This whole thing is just a vehicle for our creativity anyway. It’s nice to make fun things,” Ari Gibson said.

There were many reasons for the long development. One of the biggest ones is the money and outside interference. Because of Hollow Knight’s massive success, Team Cherry had lots of money and in no real rush for time. Because of this, Team Cherry could spend as much time as they want to craft this game to perfection. The Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 did make a very big hole in their development because of the new lockdown being enforced and halting development for a year.
Many people think that Silksong is close to or better than Hollow Knight with the vibrancy and the differences between areas. “The game is much bigger than Hollow Knight and has much more interactions because of that. Hornet being a vocal protagonist also helps give much more to the world and the story.” McCulley said.
I would highly recommend Silksong to anyone who has liked Hollow Knight enough to finish it or to anyone hungry for difficulty. If you have the extra time and effort, I would highly recommend playing through Hollow Knight before Silksong because many of the mechanics from Hollow Knight carry over easily to Silksong. “Nothing can replace Hollow Knight,” says Alex Mizzen.
