Places To Work As A Highschooler in C-U

Money is necessary for everything in this generation. A good way that you can easily and honestly make money is by working a job. Down below I’ve created a list of jobs that various highschooler work at. I asked them what it’s like, and even some benefits of working with the company. To make your choice a little easier at the end of each job there is a rating for how good or bad the job would be for a first time job.

 

Walmart 

Lesley Slue & Anonymous (senior)

Jobs worked: Restocking apparel, Cashier

Application Process: Easy, they hire fast, and give you the hours they want

Hours & Flexibility: 10-20 a week, 

Pay: starting at $14

Managers & Coworkers: People mind their own business, everyone is nice, and you can get along with your coworkers

Work environment: fast-paced when holidays coming up, early on in the day it’s pretty busy, but then slows down towards the end of the day, quiet most of the time

Benefits: health insurance, 15% off on merchandise when you work, free phone when you start, Walmart+ for free. 

Dislikes: how long orientation took, you don’t always get the hours you want

Chick – Fil – A

Allison Hobson (senior)

Jobs worked: Front of house, anything that’s not making the food(counter, serve food, take orders outside, and inside through drive-thru, and bagging food)

Application Process: Super easy to get hired, they want a lot of workers. They will most likely hire you after the interview

Hours & Flexibility: 16 hours a week. Very flexible hours, they’re good about letting you take time off when needed, and it’s easy to get someone to cover your shift if your hours have changed.

Pay: $14

Managers & Coworkers: managers are on top of things, and dedicated to their job, coworkers are nice

Work environment: efficient workspace and things are organized, it’s easy to learn, and it’s always busy.

Benefits: $8.30 in free food every shift

Dislikes: Dealing with angry customers, but that’s just a part of working in customer service. You are required to open or close 2x a week

Starbucks

Ava Borley, Katherine Gray (senior)

Jobs worked: Barista, makes drinks customer connecting (having conversations and be very welcoming to customers, especially regulars. Warming up food 

Application Process: Easy to apply online, and if you can get past the interview then your good. They ask about experience with working

Hours & Flexibility: 15-40 a week, is flexible with hours as a student

Pay: Starting $15 – 19 + 10% tips

Managers & Coworkers: They can be your best friends, and you can get close to them. Everyone is respectful, and nice

Work environment: Can be stressful cause always busy makes things go by faster. Some random days can be a little slower

Benefits: Free Spotify premium & head space financial benefits for stocks, dental insurance,  can set up your 401k for retirement, you can have leave of absence, free food and drinks every shift, and then a discount 30%

Dislikes: Some co-workers are dramatic, customers always right mindset even if they are not in the right

Mall(Aeropostale)

Candace Wilund (senior)

Jobs worked: Sales associate(works cash register, welcomes customers & helps customers out, dealing with dressing rooms)

Application Process: Easy to apply, they respond fast and give you the job fast

Hours & Flexibility: tell them your availability, and they give you what they can. Works 2-3 times a week

Pay: $13

Managers & Coworkers: All the people were nice among meeting them, will give you more practice with talking to ppl. Also prioritizing with talking to costumers 

Work environment: They prioritize with talking to costumers 

Benefits: 50% off all clothes every 6 months 30% off anything. Parents can use it too.

Dislikes: Closing shifts she usually gets them cause she gets tired, a lot of ppl when they shop and mess up clothes and then have to fix it constantly

Jimmy Johns

Jayla (junior)

Jobs worked: Making sandwiches

Application Process: Super easy & quick

Hours & Flexibility: 4 days a week, very flexible they are ok if your not able to come in.

Pay: $13

Managers & Coworkers: nice, and understanding

Work environment: 

Benefits: Employee discount

Dislikes: They send you to the doctor if you have cramps or sick, a lot of standing

Menards

Emily Hogan (teacher)

Jobs worked: Cashier

Application Process: 

Hours & Flexibility: 7 hours on school days, not too flexible

Pay: $11 on weekends you get an extra $2 

Managers & Coworkers: Very nice

Work environment:

Benefits: Health care (dental), 20% discounts

Dislikes: Not very accommodating, didn’t always follow protocols. Have to stay later & do extra. They would call you in unexpectedly, & get mad if you weren’t always scheduled.

Custard Cup

Ethan Plankell (senior) Roan O’Brien (junior)

Jobs worked: scoops custards, serves ice cream, everything but managing 

Application Process:  Easy to apply they respond quickly, 5 mins tops

Hours & Flexibility:0-5 on school days 5- 40 over the summer, they give you time off when needed. They schedule you 3 weeks in advance. 

Pay: $12 – 13

Managers & Coworkers: Coworkers are usually around your age so you can all have fun together and everyones pretty cool. Managers are strict, and understanding when it comes to complaints

Work environment: Busy, cold

Benefits: 25% discount on the days you work, free sundae when you work a 5 hr shift

Dislikes: Some cultural labor problems, customers are demanding they put the customers before the employees, cultural labor problems, a lot of bending for tall people.

Panera Bread 

Review from Amberlyn Amoine & AJ Goben(seniors)

Jobs worked: Cashier, Take Orders, make drinks, retail associate, customer service 

Application Process: Easy, Simple, Got back to really quick

Hours & Flexibility: 6-25 hours during school. 15- full time over the summer. They are very flexible, and they try and help you get the hours you need.

Pay: $14+ tips

Managers & Coworkers: Nice, considerate,

Work environment: Good not toxic, different jobs and positions you can apply for 

Benefits: Free meals, discounts on phones, shoes, electronics, health coverage, pet insurance,  50% off food anytime anywhere! Scholarships, discounts on hotels, planes (traveling. 

Dislikes: Don’t always give you the hours you want. Customers are adamant about their drink every 2 years. Sip Club

Smoothie King

Allison Williams, Ellis Mansfield (senior)

Jobs worked: crew member(dish prepping, make smoothies, take orders)

Application Process: Simple, did it through Indeed, don’t need a lot of experience, they just ask how many hours, and some qualities about you

Hours & Flexibility:5 hours weekday 7-8 on weekends. Very flexible just put in the times you can work. 

Pay: $12

Managers & Coworkers: Everyone was laid back, and wasn’t to demanding, some coworkers can be annoying. A lot of people listen to music, & watch TV.

Work environment: Very chill, was slow most times. Not a lot of face to face

Benefits: Free smoothie, if you make can drink it 50% off anything in there any time

Dislikes: Short staffed, there were only 2 or 3 people in there working so then you would have to do everything
