Central High School’s Spirit Week started on September 16, 2024. Directly after, Homecoming was September 21, 2024.
Homecoming and Spirit Week is an important tradition for high school students because it helps build school spirit and brings students closer together. Here at Central, our spirit week kicked off with a PJ day on Monday. The rest of the week was as follows: twin day on Tuesday, western on Wednesday, Adam Sandler day on Thursday, and class colors (Freshmen are white, sophomores are gray, juniors are black, and seniors are maroon) on Friday.
This Spirit Week sparked quite a bit of controversy because of students claiming that it was just like last year. “It wasn’t original at all. The Central colors are the most REDACTED tradition ever. Those are the worst REDACTED colors,” Central student, Elli Bryant claimed.
As for the participation aspect of Spirit Week, a social studies teacher at Central, Emily Hogan, said, “This year we had a decent turnout for the spirit days. But I think in previous years I think some of the days were not accessible for all students to participate in.”
The Great Gatsby Homecoming dance theme was announced by flashy posters plastered around the school. The classic book and movie adaptation sparked questions from students around the school including freshman Olivia Wolf who said “I would change it to like, a solid color theme. Like, all white or all black. Something like that, because then it can be easy for people to match the theme and I think more students would participate in the theme instead of a theme that not many people have heard of.”
On the other hand, the Pep Rally on September 20, 2024, included a performance of various pep tunes by the Central Marching Maroons, a performance of this year’s dance by the Central dance team, and a performance by the cheerleaders.
With the Pep Rally, Spirit Week, Homecoming football game, and Homecoming dance, students at Central were excited and proud to be a part of the maroon legacy.
