Released in 2009, Coraline has the title of being a Halloween cult classic. It’s become so popular that the movie has created a new aesthetic called Coraline Core. Over the past year and a half, Coraline gained a lot of attention. It even came back into theaters remastered in 3D in August of 2024. It also came back into theaters on October 31st – November 1st just in time for Halloween.
Coraline is about a young girl who moves into the pink palace–a house made into apartments. Soon after moving in, Coraline finds a small door, behind it is a place with a world that is completely better than the world she’s living in. Things take a turn for the worse when she finds out her “other mother” is not who she pretends to be.
Coraline has many twists and turns that are very intriguing. This leaves many viewers curious and on the edge of their seats. Watcher Kalayah Williams says she enjoys Coraline because “it gives off a spooky/eerie vibe and it reminds me of my childhood.” Coraline is a great movie to watch with others. Kalayah Also says “A lot of my friends love Coraline so it’s something we can do together.”
Coraline Core are fan-based projects that people make to show support for how much they love Coraline. Kenzie Martinsen, a student at Central High School, has a cover poster of Coraline in her room. TikTok creator “ToriJournal” creates scrapbook-like journals. For the spooky season, Tori Made a popout Coraline-themed page. Her video caption says “ Coraline is my favorite cartoon…A bit mysterious and dark but Coraline always has my heart.”
There is a game that was developed in January of 2009, that has recently gained popularity on the internet. Because of the popularity growing more and more every year, Coraline fans dress up as characters from the movie. Fans dress up for Comic-Cons and more during the Halloween season.
