Maroon Musings: A Poetry Column

November 21, 2022
Indefinite yet Timeless
A stiff breeze goes by,
Leaves glide effortlessly from branch to ground.
Sometimes they escape their trees in bushels, other times in mere morsels.
Pedestrians are pelted with leaves from their commutes from here to there,
Littering the ground with colors of sunsets and roaring fires.
It’s a beautiful, transitive thing.
It’s meant to be temporary,
But that’s ok.
Because it will always return next year.
Did you know that wildflowers grow here in the summer?
I never knew that until I really looked around.
And those flowers have now grayed and turned brittle,
But I know that they will be back.
Because time will always pass.
It will keep moving forward and the ground will remember their roots and things will come back.
Because they always do and they always will.
And I know that the leaves will rot away and be covered with layers of snow,
But I know that they too will be reborn.
Because the world keeps turning
And we will survive tomorrow.
And the day after that.
And the day after that.
