On August 23, 2024, Chappell Roan made a statement on an Instagram post addressing the controversy that is happening to her about how she sets her boundaries with fans. Chappell Roan, aka “L.A.’s queer pop superstar in the making”, as said by the Los Angeles Times, is a pop singer who just recently presented the best new artist. She is known for being a prominent LGBTQ+ icon. Her performances are influenced by drag culture -dramatic makeup and elaborate themed outfits being the main look. She soared to stardom with hits like “Causal”, “HOT TO GO!”, and “ Good Luck, Babe!”, these being considered her top hits. She is heading from doing club shows to taking over massive live performances and international touring.
With all this fame also came some problems for her due to the parasocial behaviors from fans and harassment from paparazzi. In one incident, a man had appeared in two different cities’ airports, after Roan had her travel information actively found out by overzealous fans.
The same man had begun to harass her when she went to the Seattle airport. This was because she had refused to sign an autograph, and the man was getting so aggressive that the police had to intervene. She recalled what happened after the harassment and stated “I got home and dropped to my knees…I have a hard time crying now because of my meds, but I was sobbing and screaming.”
The meds she was taking are for her bipolar II disorder, which she has admitted makes it difficult for her to cry. Showing how much that interaction has affected her.
Coming out of this situation, Roan had then realized that she needed more security, which she has described as “so lame.” Coming to this topic, recently she had an incident where a security guard at the Sao Paulo Hotel came up to a young fan and her mother in what was described as an “extremely aggressive manner” because the little girl had been curious about whether or not she was actually seeing Roan. While the young fan did not actually talk to her, she did go around Chappel Roan’s table, smiled, and returned.
That young girl happened to be the step-daughter of soccer player Jorginho, who was not happy about the aggressive manner that his wife and daughter were addressed. He spoke out about this in an Instagram post, and he wrote “Honestly, I don’t know in what world just passing by a table and looking… can be considered harassment.” After this statement came out Chappel made a video explaining how that was not her security guard and how she had nothing to do with what happened.
“Why is a girl expressing her fears and boundaries so infuriating?”-
