With finals right around the corner, studying has taken a sharp upturn as students prepare to finish out the year. Good study spots are hard to find but vital for increasing student success when it comes to final exams. From libraries to coffee shops, the following is a list of Champaign-Urbana’s best places to study.
- Central’s School Library
A classic study spot for students throughout the school day, which does not require travel, is Champaign Centrals’ School Library. According to Emily Pickell, the librarian at Central, the library is “the one quiet spot in the school” and a great place to escape from bustling classrooms or the commons.
This area has individual study rooms and a den in addition to the main library space. Pickell estimates that around “90 students a day” utilize the library.
It is a great option for students looking to study last-minute or without going out of their way.
- Espresso Royale
For those who prefer to study alongside coffee or tea, Espresso Royale is a great choice. Madeline Barnes, a student teacher at Central, specifically pointed out the atmosphere found at this coffee shop. “The lighting is low and sets a nice ambiance, while still having a lot of nice natural lighting,” says Barnes. She went on to say that coffee shops help her focus because of the accountability that comes from the fact that “almost everyone is working or studying.”
- Literatures and Languages Library
Found on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, this library is kept very quiet, according to Pickell. She pointed it out as a favorite study spot from when she was in college and described it as “a beautiful place to sit and work.”
Pickell added that this library is open to all, not just Illini students, despite being on the college campus. “The good thing about libraries is anyone can go in as long as you’re quiet, doing your work, and not bothering anyone.”
- Harvest Market
The upper level at Harvest Market is great for those who prefer a more bustling work environment with good background noise. Christine Nixon, Central’s library assistant, affirmed that the area is “pretty calm, but still has noise” and added that she often sees students studying there when she passes through. Several students at Central have confirmed that they enjoy studying at Harvest Market due to the variety of food choices and the amount of space available.
- Champaign Public Library
The Champaign Public Library is yet another classic study spot. Joanna Lin, a sophomore at Central, claims she enjoys studying here because “it’s always filled with students that are continuously studying,” which “makes [her] feel inclined to as well.”
Pickell also recommended the Champaign Public Library, claiming that “Upstairs they even have a quiet room where people can’t talk” for those who prefer a silent working environment.
While the places listed above are all acclaimed study spots in Champaign-Urbana, it is important to remember that everyone has different study needs. Some require background noise to focus, but there are others who prefer complete silence. The best way to find a place that works for your needs is to study in multiple areas and figure out which factors are most important in your study spaces.
