It’s that time of year again when finals are around the corner. No matter how hard students work and study, they’re probably all dreading this last set of exams.
Understandably, finals are stressful, so I have collected a few tips for students to pass this stressful time.
- Have the right mindset
Having the right mindset is always good when finals are coming up. It’s easy to be overwhelmed and procrastinate while studying. Taking a deep breath and telling yourself, “I got this,” can help a lot. Sierra Muehl, a teacher at Central High School, said, “Even though tests are nerve-racking, I still try to go into it confident.”
- Plan ahead
Determine where and when your finals are and what you’re learning about. Also, see what you could improve. Sierra Muehl said, “When I was in high school, I wasn’t really a study type of person, but I would do the reviews that teachers would give me.” Planning ahead is always useful because finals are always a hectic time.
- Find a good studying spot
If you’re having a hard time studying, it could be where you’re working. I like to get a comfy blanket and put it around me and then sit at my desk, so I’m comfortable. A senior at Central High School, Margo Gengler commented, “I make sure to switch up my surroundings, even if it’s just by sitting at my desk instead of working in bed.” Check out Lucky Hennigan’s article to learn more about good studying spots.
- Have a good studying strategy
Studying when you don’t have a studying strategy is very difficult. Here are some strategies to consider:
- Making physical flashcards. “Physical flashcards are very underrated,” Sierra Muehl says.
- Khan Academy can help with the main subjects. You can make quizzes and watch videos. It’s also free!
- Write down old notes to go over.
- Have a good sleep schedule
Several studies have shown that having enough sleep can improve your memory. The website, Yale School of Medicine, says, “Anyone who’s had a poor night’s rest can attest that the lack of sleep impairs cognition, especially memory.” A good night’s sleep before finals is very beneficial.
- Work with a study group
Meet up with some friends and study together. This is a very effective way to study for finals because everyone can help out with work, like:
- Quiz each other
- Solve problems together
- Teach concepts to other peers
- Help each other stay accountable
- Tie up split ends
Complete and submit any missing assignments you still have remaining so you focus your time on studying and overall being ready for finals. “It’s always important to finish your old assignments; you don’t want to get behind,” Genegler said.
- Get rid of distracting devices
Electronics are the main thing that distracts students from doing their work. Having a good 30 minutes studying without being on your phone or watching TV could really make a difference.

Just do it! Finals are stressful, but it’s not that bad. Gengler gives a final piece of advice, “Chill out! Finals may feel super crazy, but take an honest look at your grades. If you’ve been working hard throughout the semester, those exams really shouldn’t be super vital.”
